Stealing the Spotlight:
A Philadelphia Fashion Photography Editorial

Project Overview of Commercial Fashion Photography

This Fall fashion shoot, titled Stealing the Spotlight, is a journey through an eclectic midnight jazz club in Philadelphia. The stage performance draws everyone’s attention to the spotlight, but out of view, there is a high-fashion heist with stylish misdirection!

Everything takes place at Midnight & The Wicked. This venue is an underground speakeasy in the city. It combines Roaring 20’s flair, eclectic elegance, and modern nightlife into one unique setting.

When planning our six-page editorial fashion spread for the magazine, we chose these photo locations: the marble staircase, the crimson theater, the bank vault, the wooden bar, the purple and gold room, and of course, the main stage.

Whether you’re a brand, clothing designer, or art director, Phil Kramer specializes in commercial photography. Trust his creative production team for your next look-book, fashion campaign, and editorial magazine feature.

Creative Approach

Phil Kramer is always focused on the wow-factor.

As a team player, he trusts his creative team to use their strengths. He knows the hair and make-up artists will deliver a bold look, and the stylist will choose garments that support the story. This allows Phil to focus on capturing impactful photos.

In fashion photography, it’s all about the clothes. This type of work should present how a garment fits, moves, and feels. Our studio uses lighting and composition to enhance the clothing, rather than overpower it.

The final results feel natural, glamorous, and runway-inspired.

This photo session was planned as a six-page fashion editorial for Philadelphia RowHome magazine.

Magazine photography is different than capturing images for social media posts, billboards, or for personal fun. Magazine publishers give photographers specific dimensions that each photo must fit. In this case, a single page was 8.625 inches x 11.125 inches and full-page spreads were 17.25 inches x 11.125 inches.

When capturing fashion photography for a magazine, it is important create a mix of wide shots with clean compositions and closer frames. This gives editors enough variety to design a creative page.

Behind-The-Scenes Gallery

This fashion shoot was a true team effort! We arrived at Midnight & The Wicked around 7:00AM to set-up equipment, prepare the clothes, start hair and make-up, and test the lighting.

From 7:00AM to 5:30PM, we worked non-stop to bring this six-page editorial to life. These fun behind-the-scenes moments capture moments of collaboration and preparation. They highlight the problem-solving efforts required for high-fashion photography.

As a team, we’re able to work efficiently and simultaneously.

Before every creative project, we conduct a location scout. We’ve previously visited Midnight & The Wicked for private events, so we know the space. Location scouts help us make the right decisions when it comes to lighting, lenses, and styling.
